Camps Bay Primary School teamed up with Breadtags for Wheelchairs a few years back as a way to give back and one learner has collected thousands of bottle caps.
Cape Town, South Africa – Declan Tucker, a Grade 1 learner at Camps Bay Primary School’s Preparatory Campus, managed to collect thousands of bottle caps for a project that exchanges recyclable materials for wheelchairs.
Breadtags for Wheelchairs accepts the collection of bread tags and bottle caps. Once a specific weight of either has been collected, the funds received from recycling them is enough to purchase a wheelchair for someone in need.
The Breadtags for Wheelchairs project has been running at Camps Bay Primary School’s Preparatory Campus for over 10 years now. Started in 2008 by Mary Honeybun, the project is now run by Lorna Norris.
Over the years, Breadtags for Wheelchairs, has managed to collect enough breadtags and bottle caps to convert into 786 wheelchairs.
“We are very proud to have been associated with this project over the years. It has played a role in helping our pupils learn the value of recycling from an early age whilst at the same time helping people with disabilities. Well done to Declan on his incredible individual achievement and a big thank you to all of those pupils who have also contributed over the years.”
